In addition to being an award-winning poet and editor of the best-selling A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota, I am a writing coach and consultant based in Minneapolis. Connecting and working across artistic disciplines is also a passion; I’ve worked with individual clients as well as a consultant or artist-in-residence at the Minnesota Humanities Center, the Minnesota Museum of American Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Wisdom Ways at The Sisters of Carondelet, and more.

TEACHING & WRITING & GRANT WRITING EXPERIENCE:

I have been an educator for over twenty years in the twin cities; I’ve taught creative writing at the University of Minnesota, Macalester College, St. Catherine University, Hamline University, the Loft Literary Center, the Kundiman Retreat, and at the K-12 levels as a writer-in-the-schools in the twin cities. I have also taught college composition, advanced composition, and have tutored new immigrants in English as an Additional Language.

I have published six books, worked successfully with four publishers, have been the editor of the Twin Cities Daily Planet, have written for the StarTribuneMinnesota Spokesman-Recorder, the Minnesota Women’s PressRain Taxi Review of Books, and ExperienceLife. I co-founded a poetry micropress with poet Rachel Moritz and in 2017 co-founded Poetry Asylum with poet Su Hwang. I have had creative work published in dozens of venues, given hundreds of readings and lectures, and served on several community non-profit and government boards.

I’m a contributing editor in the feminist collective Aster(ix). As an individual artist I have been awards grants and fellowships from the Archibald Bush Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Loft Literary Society, and have been a panelist or judge for several artist grants, book contests, and book awards.

EDUCATION & TRAINING:

In addition to holding an MFA in Creative Writing from Naropa University, a Master in Teaching from University of St. Thomas, and a BA in English from Macalester College, I am a trained Racial Justice Facilitator in the YWCA Racial Justice Facilitation Program; have been trained in restorative justice by the Minnesota Peacebuilding Institute, conflict resolution models by Education Minnesota, Courageous Conversation™ protocol, Talking Circles through the Science Museum of Minnesota, Usui Reiki levels I, II, and III, biodynamic craniosacral therapy through Body Intelligence, Somatic Experiencing™, and more.
